A video search engine optimization company, Ugly Chair Productions got its humble beginnings in June 2009. Partnering with web design firms to provide corporate overview and customer testimonial videos was the focus of our efforts.

However, as the years passed by, we found that there were two troubling trends: (1) Customers were not using their videos, and (2) Customers were not getting the results they expected from their web videos.

Well, that’s no good. We can’t have a negative ROI for our clients. We have to put their videos to work.

This took Abe Erickson, founder of Ugly Chair Productions, on a journey.

Video SEO Expert

Hi. I’m Abe. I never knew I would get into video production. But, I did - AND, I LOVE IT! I honestly thought I would go into medicine or government work. I am kind of a news junky, and geo-politics always fascinates me. While serving as a missionary in The Philippines, I got to shoot some video on a camcorder my companion’s family sent him. It was pretty cool, but I did not think much of it.

Unbeknownst to me, my dad purchased a Canon video camera. And we did some cool things with it. Shot a couple of weddings and some videos for the company he works for, General Communications.

As time went on, I became more involved with video production. I decided to start offering those services to businesses in the area. That’s when what you read above happened. It was time to go on a journey, because only a few of our clients were seeing some results from the videos we produced - and that’s not good enough.

I learned that video could be extremely effective in three areas of online marketing:

  • Increasing Search Engine Rankings
  • Increasing Brand Awareness
  • Increasing Quality Leads

But it wasn’t enough to just produce videos and throw them up on a business website. And different types of videos had different results.

Ultimately, it came down to two factors: relevance and value.

As Google refined its algorithms, video was included as a top priority in organic search results. In fact, videos are 53% more likely to rank than other content.

So, if a video was optimized for search results, and the content was inline with a search query, it was deemed relevant.

If a viewer watched the video, or engaged with it in additional ways, i.e. sharing, liking, or commenting, then that video is also deemed valuable.

Interestingly enough, 80% of videos ranking on Google SERP’s are informational or educational.

So, the solution was simple:

  • Make a list of questions and research relevant keywords.
  • Produce professional, high quality videos that answers those questions.
  • Optimize the video metadata and YouTube page.
  • Link from the video to an opt-in form to generate leads.
  • Build links to the video.

And that is how I help my clients put video search engine optimization to work.
